PRINCE GEORGE— Whether your garden is big or small fresh, home grown produce always seems to taste better than store brought. With the bountiful health benefits gardening offers, the time is now to start planning your planting.

“When you grow your own food, you might actually grow fruits or vegetables that you don’t eat the rest of the year. So, you might actually eat more of a variety of different fruits and vegetables,” says Erin Branco, a registered dietitian.

Branco adds that alongside the nutritional benefits of the fresh food gardening has been shown to relieve stress, boost peoples mood, and is a form of physical activity.

If you’re new to gardening Linda Naess President of the David Douglas Botanical garden offers some of her expertise.

Linda suggests starting your seeds indoors to lengthen your growing season. “Look at seed packets if you have them, because they will tell you how long they take to germinate and when you can plant them. So, you kind of work backwards from there. If it says plant in May, we probably start at six weeks earlier depending what the seed packet does.”

While, there is plenty of information online on gardening every climate features it’s benefits and challenges. The best way to learn about gardening in Prince George is to speak to a gardener in Prince George as they know the soil. You might make some new friends along the way.

“We are in zone three, which is a pretty cold gardening zone,” adds Linda Naess. “We can’t grow here, what they can grow in the Lower Mainland or the Okanagan.”
