Unemployment rate in Prince George up slightly in March

PRINCE GEORGE — The year-over-year unemployment rate in Prince George is up slightly.

Statistics Canada says it was 6.4 per cent in March, up from 6.2 per cent in March 2023.

Despite that, 52,400 people were working, up from 49,700 this time last year. The greatest gains were in education services, healthcare, social assistance and accommodation and food services.

Little change in B.C.’s unemployment rate as it increased from 5.2 per cent in February to 5.4 per cent in March. Statistics Canada says 75,000 jobs were created in B.C. over the past 12 months.

Nationally, the unemployment rate jumped to 6.1 per cent, up from 5.8 per cent in February, the largest increase since summer 2022.

Statistics Canada says the economy shed 2,200 jobs in March, after modest increases over the last several months. Most of the job losses were in accommodation and food services. A total of 324,000 jobs were created nationally over the past 12 months, a 1.6 per cent increase.
