PRINCE GEORGE — A third-period barrage was not sustained by the Prince George Cougars on Saturday (April 27) at CN Centre.

The Portland Winterhawks tallied three goals in the third stanza en route to a 5-3 victory over the Cats in Game 2 of the best-of-seven Western Conference final, which is tied at one name apiece.

Cougars’ head coach and general manager Mark Lamb said his club had an off night.

“It was the whole game,” Lamb told reporters in a video posted on Cougars’ social media. “We didn’t play a very good game.

“It was right at the start of the game. I didn’t think we had it at all. Some guys were working hard. We weren’t connected. It was just a sloppy game by us.”

Kyle Chyzowski, Jack O’Brien, James Stefan, Diego Buttazzoni and Marcus Nguyen tallied for the Winterhawks, with Jan Spunar making 29 saves to pick up the victory between the pipes.

Zac Funk, Borya Valis and Oren Shtrom notched goals for the Cougars in support of goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen, who stopped 33 shots in a losing effort.

“They’re a good hockey team,” Lamb said. “They didn’t want to go down 2-0. We didn’t react to it.

“We need more from some people in playoffs.”

The next three games of the series will take place in Portland at Veterans Memorial Arena, with Game 3 slated for Monday (April 29), Game 4 on Wednesday (May 1) and Game 5 on Thursday (May 2).

Watch parties will be held at CN Centre for all three road games. Admission is $4.

“Now we just have to regroup,” Lamb said. “We go back to work and get ready for that next game.”
