How to protect yourself from wildfire smoke

Apr 30, 2024 | 5:00 AM

PRINCE GEORGE— With numerous active wildfires and multiple droughts across the province, B.C. could be in for another season of smoke. It’s important to take precautions to protect yourself especially if you are pregnant or have respiratory or heart conditions.

You can find air quality advisories on the government of B.C. website as well as a list of recommendations. The first recommendation is to make sure the air quality inside your home is clean. You can do this by sealing your windows and making sure none are open when the air quality outside is sub-optimal. Additionally, you can get an air purifier with a HEPA-filter to clean the air indoors.

When there is an air quality advisory in effect reduce your outdoor exposure as much as possible. If you do need to go outside plan your route and check to see if you can leave the house when the smoke is less acute.

If you feel a shortness of breath or other respiratory systems visit the doctor or call the provincial health information phone line at 811.
