Mark Lamb named WHL Coach of the Year

PRINCE GEORGE — Update: Just hours after being named WHL Coach of the Year, Mark Lamb has also won the Lloyd Saunders Trophy, given annually to the WHL Executive of the Year.

This is the first time Lamb has been awarded the trophy and its the first time a Cougars executive has won the award.

Lamb and his staff have worked together to build the team through the WHL Prospect’s Draft and have made some key acquisition through trades and free-agent signings.

Of the 25 players who appeared in at least one game for the Coguars this season, 17 were drafted by the Cougars under Lamb’s leadership.

In his sixth year with the Cats, Lamb helped the Cougars to a 49-15-1-3 record, the best in team history.

The team also won the WHL’s BC division for the second time. In addition to the remarkable season, the Cougars ranked first in the WHL in road wins (24) and power-play goals for (84). The 2023-2024 Prince George Cougars paced the Western Conference in wins (49), points (102), power-play percentage (30.1%), penalty-kill percentage (84.3%), and goal differential (+129).

“This really is a team award,” said Mark Lamb. “Winning this award means that we have a great hockey team and a great coaching staff. With the addition of Jim Playfair and having Carter Rigby and Taylor Dakers, it’s a really tight group. Acknowledging this award and winning this award, it goes to a lot of people.”

Lamb is the first coach in team history to win the award.

The Cougars are back on the ice Wednesday night (May 1) in Portland for Game 4 of the Western Conference finals versus the Winterhawks. Portland leads the best-of-7 series two-games-to 1.
