New child care centre to replace former Austin Road Elementary

May 1, 2024 | 11:19 AM

PRINCE GEORGE— The Board of Education of SD57 announced this Wednesday that the former Austin Road Elementary School will soon be demolished. The demolition awarded to Napp Enterprises Ltd. will pave the way for a new child care centre.

The child care centre is one of three coming to SD57 as part of a $13.45 million ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund. The funding will be provided by both the federal and provincial governments and includes the costs of the demolition.

The new childcare centre will provide space for 12 children under 36 months of age, 25 children from 30 months to school age, and 25 school-aged children.

Austin Road Elementary originally opened its doors in 1967 and served the City until 2010. The building has been partially used by community user groups since that time but SD57 says the aging infrastructure makes maintenance and repurposing too costly for permanent use.

Abatement work has already begun and demolition work is expected to begin in the middle of May 2024. The demolition is expected to be completed in the middle of August 2024. Construction fences will be erected around the site to ensure the safety of the community. If you have any questions or concerns about the project you are asked to contact the SD57 administration office.
