PGSA hosts annual icebreaker tournament, still welcoming new members

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Soccer Association (PGSA) held its annual Icebreaker tournament today, which is focused on letting interested community members hit the field with some teams to see if they’re interesting in joining the league.

“We do it every year, and it’s basically a way to get people out to start the season. All our reoccurring teams are coming back and playing, some of them are looking for new players, and at the same time, there’s new people looking for teams to play on. So this is a good opportunity for people to find a team to join,” said Savio D’Silva, the PGSA’s Vice President.

While the tournament already wrapped up, that doesn’t mean you can’t join anymore, as D’Silva says the club is accepting new members until August. The PGSA is an 18+ soccer club for adults, although it recently has started to integrate more youth players into the league as well. While the PGSA has close to 700 members, it’s always looking for more and is ready to welcome anyone who would like to give it a go.

“It’s a great community, it’s amazing. Everyone here is so welcoming. I just felt like no matter what your skill level is, you have a place. Everyone is so close, everyone is so welcoming, and even after the games, everyone comes up to the clubhouse for a few drinks, you watch some games, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon,” said the PGSA’s Marketing Director Mitchell Redpath.

Both the men’s and women’s leagues are divided into different divisions, with division 1 featuring high level players like former University athletes, while division 2 and 3 offer varying levels of more recreational, casual play for those who just want to get active with some friends.

“In division two and three we have no slide tackle, so people can be worry free about not getting slide tackled and not going to work the next day,” D’Silva said.

At the moment there is no division 1 for women, and this is something D’Silva hopes to soon add, saying he’s hoping the PGSA is able to recruit more women to expand its divisions and teams. Beyond these divisions D’Silva added there are several other programs, like a drop in for people over 50 years old, co-ed drop ins, and more.
