BURNABY — Wildfire is not an unfamiliar topic for British Columbians.

And for this year’s emergency preparedness week, which is between May 5-11 this year, United Way BC released two emergency preparedness guidebooks for seniors, families, and individuals.

While daunting as it sounds, the non-profit organization says it’s necessary for people in B.C. to plan for the wildfire season ahead.

“History has taught us that circumstances can change quickly and dramatically, and it is better to be proactive than reactive,” from news release by United Way BC on May 6, 2024.

Each guidelines provides informations on how to create a plan in case of extreme weather, and outlines critical information such as what to have on hand in case of an emergency.

It also teaches how to navigate power or utility loss and insurance considerations.

During the record-breaking wildfire season of 2023, United Way BC says they provided immediate assistance, including gas cards, food, and essential supplies for people during traumatic moments of their lives, thanks to the generosity of British Columbians and corporations.

The BC charity plans to do the same this year.
