REID LAKE — A proposed Cannabis Production in Reid Lake, about half an hour west of Prince George, is not sitting well with some in the community. Multiple submissions from community members to the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George have expressed a number of concerns about the project.

The applicant for this process, Liam Wallace, is requesting from the Regional District that their be an amendment to an existing bylaw that would get rid of the minimum site requirement for this particular site, but the site requirement isn’t the only thing that is concerning community members.

“We have public safety concerns. We have concerns about our property values decreasing. Crime is a huge factor, Cannabis is a legal agricultural product, but we still believe that it will attract criminal activity.” – Jenna Byfield, Resident of Reid Lake

In a background report to the regional district, the Prince George RCMP states that they do have concerns with the application and do not support the request. The Mounties also said that there would not be adequate resources to provide an effective response to an organized break in/robbery. Police also stated that a chain link fence and cameras being proposed as sufficient security by the applicant, would be a minimal deterrent.

In letters to the regional district, other community members have voiced their concerns, saying that re-zoning the land for the project is feasible. One letter mentioned their concerns about pollution as well as potential intrusions it could bring to families in the area. The Regional District will make their decision on the zoning amendment for the project at the next board meeting on May 23rd.
