John West removed from Lheidli T’enneh Council

PRINCE GEORGE – Lheidli T’enneh Council Member John West has been removed from Council. On May 10, a binding Band Council Resolution (BCR) was passed for the removal of West.

It follows his arrest last month at the House of Ancestors and subsequent suspension by council.

“As Mr. West did not voluntarily provide his resignation, Council has taken the necessary step of removal through BCR,” a Lheidli T’enneh press release reads.

The release explains this decision was made due to the Elected Council Policies and Procedures Manual, which expects the Chief or council members to resign if involved in a legal situation.

“Any member of Chief and Council charged in a Court of Law with an Indictable Offence will be presumed innocent until proven otherwise, but in the interest of providing sound, stable government, it is expected that the Chief or Council member will step down until the legal matter is resolved or the normal election procedure occurs, whichever occurs first,” the Manual reads.

The release concludes by saying Lheidli T’enneh will not be making any public statements to the media.
