PRINCE GEORGE – It was back in December of 2017 that Dr. Nadine Caron launched Phase Two of the Biobank at UNBC, which was created in 2015.

Rural and indigenous biobanks are extremely rare and that was the initial focus of Dr. Caron’s work and now First Nations from across the region have opted to create a First Nations biobank.

“For the first time we’re creating something that would stop the marginalization and be the property of choice to be involved in research and actually make access to research accurate,” explains Dr. Caron.

Wilf Adam is from the Lake Babine Nation, which is one of the endorsing bands.

“We were talking about how we can track illness or how we can track our membership in terms of the data. There was absolutely nothing up here.”

With the unanimous endorsements from the chiefs and councils across the region, there are still a number of steps ahead, like what the organization will look like and how to address some of the prevalent issues.
