PRINCE GEORGE – Last April the amount of building permits issued by the City of Prince George went up compared to April of 2022 and 2023, which as City Council optimistic for the future of our community.

“The construction is not just the the results that come out of it. The industry, the government buildings, and the housing and the other actual uses of it. But also during the process of construction, we have, an amazing force of builders, construction companies here in Prince George and getting those workers on the job, getting them doing the things, producing, making those buildings means we get incomes,” City Councillor Garth Frizzell said.

The permits given in April were for:

  • Five commercial building alterations
  • Three new industrial buildings
  • One new institutional building
  • One institutional building alteration
  • Six new single detached dwellings (residential)
  • One new mobile dwelling (residential)

“We’re very mindful of the fact that we want to get more housing here. Our supply of housing needs to be bumped up, and we’re seeing builders respond,” Frizzell said.

One of the biggest projects that began recently is the new parkade at UHNBC, which is being built in anticipation of the new acute care tower. Beyond the benefit of the parkade and the construction jobs it creates, Frizzell says large projects like this set up our community for even larger projects down the road.

“That $50 million parkade that the province is building means that there’s an anticipation that we will get an announcement and we will secure those tax dollars to build the acute care tower that we so badly need here in Prince George. So it is not just a sign of building permits and planned construction now, but it’s a signal for what we can anticipate in the future,” he said.
