B.C.’s police watchdog called to Mackenzie to investigate shooting death of a man

MACKENZIE, B.C. — B.C.’s police watchdog has been told of an officer who shot a man to death over the weekend.

In a news release issued Sunday (June 2) afternoon, the BC RCMP say the Mackenzie detachment was told of a man trying to cash a fraudulent cheque at a bank at around 2:00 p.m. Saturday.

Mackenzie RCMP officers arrived and arrested the man, but while escorting him outside a struggle ensured and he reportedly showed a weapon. An officer fired their gun and struck the man.

The man was sent to hospital where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was notified of the incident. Its role is to investigate all officer-related incidents in B.C. that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
