PRINCE GEORGE— June 24, 2024 marks two years since the overturning of Roe V. Wade in the United States. Women’sStrikeCanada is asking people from across Canada to stand in solidarity with “our American sisters in the fight to regain autonomy over our own bodies and existence.”

Prince George will be seeing on of those rallies outside City Hall on June 24, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Organizers of the Prince George event say that while Roe V. Wade is an american issue Canada is facing a similar political landscape.

“Since 1987, at least 48 anti-choice private member bills or motions have been introduced in Canada’s Parliament and they continue to push to give fetus rights and strip them from women,” explains local organizer Gillian Johnston. “If some politicians and lawmakers had their way, an incredible number of women would either be dead or assaulted and forced to carry that unwanted pregnancy to term. As we have seen in a recent study published in JAMA International Medicine, in Texas alone there have been 26,000 rape-caused pregnancies since the overturn of Roe V. Wade and an estimated 64,000 such pregnancies nationwide.”

Johnston adds that this movement is not just about reproductive rights but about Women’s rights in general citing the ‘Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability'(CFOJA). The CFOJA says that since 2018-2022, over 850 women and girls were killed, with 83 per cent of the deaths being at the hands of men. In addition, 30 percent of Canadian woman aged 15 and older have been been sexually assaulted outside of an intimate relationship at least once.
