Scouts Canada highlights Prince George as area needing volunteers

PRINCE GEORGE – Scouts Canada says Prince George is at the top of the list for areas of need regarding volunteers.

“They’re actually a really active group already, but there’s a waitlist of 40 kids that cannot go simply because of the lack of volunteers. We need at least ten more volunteers for these 40 kids to be able to join,” said Sophia Killawee, a Scouts Canada Youth Spokesperson.

Killawee says any volunteers at all would be greatly appreciated, and the only requirement is that you’re 14 years old or older. As for what volunteers do, it’s primarily about “facilitating the youth led aspects of the program,” although Killawee adds in her own personal experience, being a volunteer has been an incredibly enriching and enjoyable experience.

“If you’re interested in spending lots of time outdoors, you would absolutely be doing that if you volunteered here. You would also be taking part in community service projects, day adventures, and overnight camping trips,” she said.

Prince George is an outdoors only group barring extreme weather, so Killawee says it’s perfect for anyone who loves being in nature. However, on days when you’re inside she said there’s opportunities for fun activities too like rock climbing, swimming, and more.

Beyond volunteers, Killawee adds any support from local businesses would be a tremendous help too.

“A business could maybe support them a little bit with ideas for projects. So if businesses need help, Scouts is a lot about community service, which means that if businesses need help, they could collaborate with Scout groups who would be more than happy to do it. They could also help Scouts financially, though that’s not necessary at all,” she said.

“As somebody who has been in Scouts and had that part of their childhood, you’re creating something. You’re creating a safe space for children that they will never forget. And to anybody who chooses to volunteer, we are so grateful for you,” Killawee said.
