Fight back against pollen allergies

Jun 11, 2024 | 5:00 AM

PRINCE GEORGE— According to StatsCan pollen and grass allergies are the most common allergy someone can have. This allergy can make it hard for some to get outside and enjoy the summer. If you get a runny nose from pollen, pharmacist Brett Chiasson from Third Ave Pharmacy recommends taking a nasal spray that contains a corticosteroid.

If you have more serious reactions from the allergy it might be better to try an antihistamine.

“They block the histamine type response that causes all the pain and suffering during allergy season.” explains Chiasson. “There’s prescription strength antihistamines that require monitoring by physicians. But you can get those with a prescription and a visit to your doctor.”

Reducing your exposure can also help with allergic reactions. Don’t hang your clothes outside to dry and pollen and grass could latch on to it, as well as avoid leaving your windows open at night. In addition, Chiasson recommends figuring out the exact plants your allergic to so you can avoid them as much as possible.
