National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations take place at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park
PRINCE GEORGE — June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day and it is a day to recognize and celebrate the culture, history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Metis across Canada.
The day was announced in 1996 by then Governor General Romeo LeBlanc. In Prince George, an 8 hour event at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park took place. The event includes a day full of Indigenous artisans, musicians, drummers, dancers, activities for all ages, bannock and other tasty food, and interactive information displays with community partners.
Not only is the day about recognizing and celebrating, but can also be a chance to learn something. Chief Dolleen Logan of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation said “take five minutes to learn about your local First Nation and what a better day to learn than coming out to a beautiful day in the park.”
