Two wildfires suspected to be caused by lightning strikes were discovered east of Prince George on Saturday (June 22) evening.

Neither fire is more than one hectare in size, according to Prince George Fire Centre fire information officer Pedro Roldan-Delgado.

The Torpy River fire, about 150 kilometres east of Prince George on the Yellowhead Highway, is about one hectare in size.

Meanwhile, the Longworth fire, about 115 kilometres east of Prince George on Upper Fraser Road, is about .01 hectares.

Both fires are listed as out of control, but Roldan-Delgado said initial attack crews are working on both blazes, with help from rain in the area.

“With this rain, the fire shouldn’t be growing,” Roldan-Delgado said. “If it does, it should be very small growth.

“They believe within a couple days to a week, they should have these two fires out. It’s not near communities and nothing is at immediate risk at this time. It’s just big timber in that neck of the woods.”

Roldan-Delgado said big timber can result in danger trees that cause delays in firefighting efforts due to safety protocol.
