PRINCE GEORGE — Mayor Simon Yu says that the community safety town hall that took place at the end of May has provided council with direction on where to go next.

City council heard a report from city staff at Monday night’s council meeting, following up on the town hall and the report noted that a lot concerns were brought forward about the downtown core as well as specific attention towards encampment related issues. When it comes to public safety issues in other parts, Mayor Simon Yu says that those areas will also be focused on.

“Of course, we need to focus on other areas as well, but this is a primary area that we would like to take action in the next few months of improve the situation.”, Yu noted.

Staff also recommended that the City approach the management of Moccasin Flats, in four phases, building capacity, demonstrating capacity, transitioning to other forms of housing and maintain capacity and preventing entrenchment. This was echoed last year by the Premier when the MOU between the province and the city was signed.

“The goal is to help people living in encampments or public spaces come inside to access temporary or permanent housing that fits their needs. We’re also committing to further work that will help prevent and respond to encampments in Prince George.” – B.C. Premier David Eby

Mayor Yu said that the city “definitely needs to meet up with other government agencies, because at the end of the day, we recognize that the issue is a complex one. We need multiple levels of government to act.”

Also discussed at last night’s meeting, were ways for council and staff better understand the needs in areas outside of the downtown area and have said they will work to include public safety as an element in other engagement activities that take place around town.
