More flights in and out of Prince George cancelled Sunday as WestJet mechanics strike continues

PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George Airport (YXS) continues to feel the impact of the labour dispute between WestJet and the union representing nearly 680 of the airline’s aircraft mechanics and tech ops.

According to YXS’ flight status page online, WestJet’s departure from Prince George to Calgary at 11:25 a.m. and two departures from Prince George to Vancouver at 1:40 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. Sunday have been cancelled. Additionally, the arrival from Calgary at 10:36 a.m. and the arrivals from Vancouver at 1:03 p.m. and 7:03 p.m. have been cancelled.

In a news release issued Saturday, WestJet states a total of 407 flights have been cancelled up to Tuesday, July 2, to “maintain stability across its remaining operation.”

WestJet adds it will continue parking aircraft and working to safely reduce its operating fleet to nearly 30 aircraft by Sunday evening.

In its own statement Sunday, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) says while the arbitration imposed by federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan is scheduled to move forward, the Canada Industrial Relations Board ruled that the union still has a right to continue its legal strike.
