City of Prince George to receive critical infrastructure funding

PRINCE GEORGE — Three levels of government say they’ve finalized a deal that will provide more than $1.6 billion in federal funding over the next five years to communities in British Columbia, to build and maintain critical infrastructure, through the Canada Community Builds Fund (CCBF). In 2024-2025, over $300 million will be coming to British Columbia and some of that money will make its way to Prince George.

Initially, when it was created, the money was earmarked for very specific things, such as road rehabilitation but evolved over the years to fund some civic facility projects. In the past, there has been uncertainty on whether the funds would actually be provided every year.

The City of Prince George will be receiving approximately 3 million dollars from the fund, going towards eligible infrastructure projects. And that money is needed, with the City being able to use the funds for a wide range of infrastructure priorities, such as repairing roads, sidewalks and fixing critical pieces of infrastructure that are buried deep underground such as water and sewer lines. The funding could be used for already planned capital project, but it could also provide help for when the unexpected happens like a water main break. With the costs to municipal governments increasing, the CCBF has to grow to keep up with costs.

“The infrastructure costs go up faster than inflation, so it’s pretty important to have that index in there. It means that we’re not stuck at 2000 or 2008 levels. It’s growing every year.” – Councillor Garth Frizzell, City of Prince George

Over the ten years of the program, $1.25 billion has been disbursed among local governments in B.C.
