Heat Warnings in effect for Prince George and area: Here’s how you can stay cool

Jul 8, 2024 | 12:26 PM

PRINCE GEORGE—Enviroment Canada has issued heat warnings across Northern B.C. including Prince George and Stuart Nechako areas, as well as for the Cariboo-North. While it’s not an extreme heat emergency there is still a risk of heat illnesses, especially for children and the elderly.

If you have an air conditioner, make sure it’s in good working order. However, if you do not have an air conditioner the BC Centre for disease control recommends finding somewhere to cool off on hot days such as libraries, community centres, or an outdoor space with shade and running water. Close your windows and blinds in the morning to block out the sun and open your doors at night to cool down your home. Keep track of temperatures as indoor temperatures above 31 C can be hazardous to your health.

To reduce your risk of heat illnesses make sure you stay hydrated. You can also wear a damp shirt to cool off or go swimming. Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day. If you begin feeling unwell, dizzy, or have headache find shelter and cool off as these are the warning signs of heat stroke.
