11th Cougars Alumni Charity Golf Tournament sets new record for funds raised

PRINCE GEORGE – The 11th annual Cougars Alumni Charity Golf Tournament set a new record for funds raised, as more than $240,00 was donated to Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation through the tournament.

“This is by far our biggest golf tournament yet. We had 38 alumni that all came into town and came out to support us. The alumni alone raised over $100,000, so we’re so grateful,” said the Foundation’s Marketing and Development Manager Amanda Holmes.

Prior to this tournament the previous ten years of the Cougars Alumni Tournament raised around $750,000, so this year’s event was substantially higher than normal years.

“We attribute that to our sponsors, our donors, the teams that played, nobody held back. Those guys and girls were spending money, knowing that it’s all going for cardiac care here in the North,” Holmes said.

Having raised close to one million dollars through this tournament, Holmes explained a cardiac care unit has been opened at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia, but the fundraising will continue so the unit can be upgraded and get the equipment needed to handle all cardiac care cases. Holmes said some cases can be handled in Prince George, but more serious cases need to be flown out to locations like Vancouver, so the hope is to continue fundraising so all care can be done here.

“Once you’ve had a cardiac event, the clock is ticking and we need to get these people treatment and help as soon as possible. Right now, if you have a severe cardiac episode in Prince George, you’re being flown to Vancouver, Kelowna, Victoria. So time is of essence, and the more ability we have to to help here, and have the equipment here and the specialists here, the better chances we have to survive,” Holmes said.

Planning has already begun for the 12th annual tournament next year, and Holmes said tickets have already sold out.
