BARKERVILLE — Good news for residents in the Barkerville and Wells area Monday afternoon.

The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) has lifted an evacuation alert for the area prompted by the Cornish Mountain wildfire.

The fire was discovered last Wednesday (July 10) and has grown to 70 hectares. Investigators believe it was sparked by a lightning strike. It is still listed as out of control, as of 3pm on July 16. The BC Wildfire Service says that “fire behaviour continues to display Rank 1 which means it is a smouldering ground fire.”

The evacuation alert was put in place Thursday, but CRD officials lifted it Monday.
