What makes a good Sunscreen?

PRINCE GEORGE—While the summer heat is nice it is important to recognize the sun is a deadly laser and if not properly protected you will burn. While wearing shirts and staying in the shade blocks all harmful UV rays, sunscreen is a great option for any exposed body parts. But what’s the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50?

Brett Chiasson a pharmacist at Third Ave Pharmacy explains the SPF stands for Sun protection factor and that while SPF 50 does protect a bit better than SPF 30 it isn’t a huge return on investment to go with a higher SPF. He adds that it’s better to ensure that its a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Sunburns may still happen. Sunburn symptoms can include red, tender skin, blisters, and peeling skin. If you do get a sunburn it’s important to get out of the sun and cool off.

“I always recommend people stay very hydrated because if they get sunburn, there’s a good chance that they weren’t hydrating the day before,” says Chiasson. “Maybe too many beers or something in the sun, making you extra dehydrated and more prone to sunburn.”

If you use an aloe vera gel, Chaisson warns to not buy any that are green as the plant gel is naturally clear and it’s just unneccessary additives in your body.
