A joint, regional response to local challenges

PRINCE GEORGE — At city council on Monday night, the need for a joint, regional response to local challenges was discussed. The goal is to have all levels of government collaborate on local issues.

The recommendation that was passed by council says Council is to support the Mayor organizing meetings with local representatives from all orders of government with the goal of developing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to help address regional gaps.

“I believe we recognize the challenges our region faces as compounding crises in healthcare, mental health, drug addictions and natural disasters continue to impact the Province. We recognize that these issues overlap with all levels of jurisdiction and need joint leadership. We have committed to working together as representatives from five orders of government to address these issues and now need to connect to prioritize and advance this work together. ” – Mayor Simon Yu, City of Prince George

MLA Shirley Bond says that she wants to see ongoing discussions with all levels of government on key issues like mental health, addictions and homelessness, but also wants to see action, saying “I think meetings matter, but action matters more.”

Councillor Garth Frizzell says that big city issues are now ones that are in the realm of the province or the federal government, but says that with the MOU, all levels of government will work together regardless.

Mayor Simon Yu said in the report to council that as a starting place, he intends on raising the need for expanding both mental health and drug addictions treatment options within the region.
