Paralympic send-off to be held this Friday at Canada Games Plaza

PRINCE GEORGE— Local parathlete Joel Ewert is heading to the 2024 Paris Paralympics and the City of Prince George is inviting everyone to Canada Games Plaza for a send-off event.

The send off will take place on Friday, August 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with the City encouraging attendees to wear red or Canada-themed gear.

Joel was born with cerebral palsy, and has showcased his exceptional skill and athletism throughout his sports career which consist of both basketball and Rugby. This will be Joel’s Olympic debut as a part of the wheelchair rugby team.

He first gained attention from the coaches during his tenure as part of Team B.C. in wheelchair basketball at the Canada Winter Games. In 2017, he became part of the national wheelchair rugby team where he played a key role in Team Canada’s silver medal win at the last-chance Paralympic qualifying event.

Outside of sports, Joel has earned his degree in biomedical studies at the University of Northern British Columbia and will be attending the University of British Columbia’s Northern Medical Program in Prince George.

There will be an opportunity to sign a Canada Flag which will be presented to Joel before his journey to Paris.

The 2024 Paris Paralympic Games will take place from August 28 to September 8, 2024.
