MACKENZIE — The Prince George School District has provided an update on the construction of a new child care centre in Mackenzie.

Plans for a new 62-space child care centre located at 32 Heather Crescent in Mackenzie were first announced in September 2023 thanks to funding from the federal and provincial governments through the ChildCare BC New Spaces Fund.

“Demolition of the former Mackenzie Elementary school was completed in October 2023 and the project went through a rigorous design and budget process from September 2023 to February 2024,: says the Prince George School District.

“Rising construction costs resulted in a budget shortfall, and approval for additional funding from the federal and provincial governments was confirmed in June 2024. The project was tendered in July 2024 and awarded to Datoff Bros. Construction. Datoff Bros. Construction has provided general contracting services across British Columbia and Alberta since 1991.”

Construction of the new child care centre is expected to begin next month with completion of the project anticipated in the fall of 2025.

The centre will provide 12 child care spaces under 36 months, 25 child care spaces 30 months to school age, and 25 school age child care spaces.

“The Board of Education is thrilled with the plans for the new Child Care Centre in Mackenzie and we are looking forward to supporting this necessary service for the caregivers and children of Mackenize and the surrounding areas,” says Board of Education Chair Craig Brennan.
