Weber out as Conservative candidate, will run as independent

Sep 3, 2024 | 4:54 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — Conservative Party of BC candidate for Prince George-Mackenzie, Rachael Weber has been ousted by the party ahead of the October election.

On Labour Day Monday, reports began to circulate that Rachael Weber was dropped by the Conservative Party of BC as their candidate for the riding of Prince George-Mackenzie. And later that day, Rachael Weber confirmed on her Facebook page that she had been replaced over the weekend.

The party also removed Weber’s profile from their website.

“It may turn off some real traditional diehard conservative voters, but in terms of having a real chance to win the election, I think it is beneficial. You’re going to see John Rustad, you know, trying to be a little bit more mainstream, appealing to as many people as he can. – Chris Beach, Political Scientist Instructor, CNC

At last week’s joint announcement between Kevin Falcon and John Rustad, both leaders said that candidates would be re-vetted, and the Conservatives have appeared to switch tactics on the candidacy for Prince George-Mackenzie. The candidate for the Conservatives has not yet been announced as of September 3.

Weber confirmed to CKPG News Tuesday afternoon, that she will be running as an independent candidate in Prince George-Mackenzie.

With Weber running as an independent, that could turn the Prince George-Mackenzie riding into a three-way race.

“It could have an effect. She could siphon off enough votes, you know, for either party, but that that just remains to be seen. Traditionally independent candidates do not get a lot of votes, but sometimes they get enough to make a difference.” – Chris Beach, Political Scientist Instructor, CNC
