Carney Street Residents Fearful of Vandalism

PRINCE GEORGE – Some longtime residents of Carney Street have reached their breaking point over crime in their neighbourhood. In the past few weeks, Vandals have broken 90 percent of one resident’s windows.

Valerie Sabyan and her family have been living in fear for the past few weeks. Almost every window in their home has been broken, and residents are frustrated with the growing vandalism.

“ Everybody’s now hiding behind their doors because you don’t know what you’re going to get.”

30-year resident of Carney Street

Sabyan lives in her home with little natural light because she is in a holding pattern waiting for replacement windows.

Lisa Cousley has lived in the neighbourhood for over twenty years, and recently, she has gotten into the habit of peeking into her backyard to confirm that there are no unwanted people.

“ It is frightening, I don’t want my grandchildren to go out into my yard without me being out there first, which they should be able to play in my yard because it’s a totally fenced yard in the back.”

According to these residents, the RCMP are responsive to the neighbourhood’s concerns, but the crime continues.

City councillor Ron Polilo has seen this issue before, and a possible solution would be to develop a community watch to fight crime.

“More eyes and more ears on the ground to collect information, to give to police, to investigate, and hopefully, that’ll, you know, make a difference. In that neighbourhood.”

Valarie Sabyan, who is retired, is disappointed that she is forced to spend her retirement years on guard protecting her property.
