RCMP call school speed zone enforcement a ‘disappointing success’

PRINCE GEORGE — “A disappointing success.”

That’s how the Prince George RCMP describe Tuesday’s back to school speed zone blitz in school zones.

Police officers focused their attention on two schools in town – Spruceland and Peden Hill elementary schools and issued eight tickets and 15 warnings to drivers for speeding.

Additionally, one driver was ticketed for using his cell phone in a school zone. RCMP say the driver was prohibited from driving and had his car impounded for seven days.

The tickets were issued over a two hour span and RCMP call is the highest number of back- to-school violations in recent years.

“With the start the start of the school season, we are asking drivers to avoid distractions and watch for children, especially near schools, parks and residential areas,” said Tracey Hoffman, local ICBC Road Safety Coordinator. “We encourage parents and caregivers to give their children a refresher on road safety and practice their route to and from school if they’ll be walking or cycling.”

Police officers and RCMP Patrol Volunteers will continue to conduct school zone speed enforcement throughout the coming weeks to reinforce the message that kids are back to school and school zones are in effect.
