Urban Farmscape Society outlines plans for community farm

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Urban Farmscape Society is a grassroots coalition of community members and non-profits dedicated to enhancing food security and food sovereignty in Prince George and they are hoping to create a community farm.

The society recently asked city council to purchase a five acre piece of land near the Hudson’s Bay wetland. The current owners are hoping to sell and downsize and would like to see those five acres used as a community garden.

The society also asked the city that if they purchase the five acres of the land, that the city place a restrictive covenant on the land to limit development to that of a community farm, and designate the Urban Farmscape Society to manage said community farm.

Benefits from the proposed community farm, according to the society, would be increased access to locally-grown food for the entire community, increase food security for neighbourhoods such as the VLA and create community space for multi-generational learning and food production.
