Year-over-year unemployment rate drops in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE — The unemployment rate in August in Prince George was 4.7 per cent.

That’s down from 8.6 per cent in August last year. Statistics Canada says that 56,700 people were working last month compared to 51,000 a year ago.

Wholesale and retail trade and healthcare and social services saw the biggest job gains while the natural resource sector was down. Stats Can says 6,000 people were working in the natural resource sector in August of 2023 compared to 3,800 last month.

Provincially, the unemployment rate rose slightly from 5.5 per cent in July to 5.8 per cent in August while federally the unemployment rate was 6.6 per cent – a .2 increase from July.
