PRINCE GEORGE— Since 2016, the Red Dress Campaign has served as a support system to the many loved ones affected by the murdered and missing not only indigenous women , girls and two-spirit people, but all women, girls and two-spirit people.

“We know people. My loved one, I know someone. It’s the amount of people that have been affected by this issue that is staggering. It’s horrific,” said President of the Prince George Red Dress Society, Tammy Meise on Sunday. “But when we come together as a community, it’s a sense of belonging.”

Like many others, Meise has been affected by tragedy, but has used her story to help create a safe space for others to heal as well.

“A lot of families do come out and tell their stories and somebody’s listening. There’s always somebody to listen to what they have to say,” said one of the directors of the event Brenda Wilson-John.

Wilson-John faced the unimaginable loss of her sister 30-years-ago and is doing what she can to make sure this doesn’t keep happening.

“We’ve advocated for safer bus routes, cell service, putting up cell towers along highway 16 and just trying to implement all those safety factors for our communities, so that our families are taken care of and so that this doesn’t happen to any more of our loved ones.”

Along with these preventative measures, Wilson-John is hoping Prince George is the next community to receive a Red Dress Alert. A Red Dress Alert is similar to an Amber Alert and it’s currently a Pilot Project in Manitoba.

The Red Dress Campaign has also introduced ties alongside the dresses.

“We also have a tree with ties for representation for men and boys, because every single life matters. This is not just an issue that affects women and girls. There needs to be representation for everybody,” said Meise on Sunday. “What if that was my sons? What if that was your brother? Their lives matter just as much as my best friend or my mom.

The Red Dress Campaign and their strong community continue their fight against the many injustices that need to be stopped.
