PRINCE GEORGE— The UNBC women’s soccer team are back in Prince George this weekend for their home opener against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. On Friday It’s EmpowHer Day at Masich Place Stadium where all self identifying females of any age who play sports get free admission to the match.

“Being a girl who grew up watching sports and there wasn’t a huge representation for that and watching it evolve over time, if that’s something we can do positively for the younger generations, then I think it’ll get all the girls super excited,” said fourth year midfielder Camryn Cline on how important EmpowHer Day is.

The Timberwolves are coming of a tough opening weekend, losing their first game of the season 4-0 to the Mount Royal Cougars and their second 4-1 to the Vikes in Victoria.

UNBC come into the 2024 Canada West season, with a very young squad, fielding 15 rookies.

“We’re definitely balancing that, ” said third year defender Celeste Kirkness on the inexperienced group, “but they bring a lot of spirit and energy and they’re all super eager to learn. So it’s been a good environment thus far.

Friday’s opponent, the WolfPack are already in their third week of Canada West action. Thompson Rivers dropped their first two matches of the season against the UBC Okanagan Heat and the Trinity Western Spartans before grabbing their first win of their campaign, 4-0 against the Fraser Valley Cascades.

The Timberwolves wrap up their opening weekend at Masich with a match-up against the Heat on Sunday for game two of their season-long four-game home stand.
