PRINCE GEORGE— The Spruce Kings are entering their second and final weekend of preseason action. The Langley Rivermen are in town as the Kopar Memorial Arena will host their first two games of the fall.

The home side is coming off a tough season last year, managing just 16 wins in their 54 regular season matches. Despite the challenging campaign, the returning players have an extra year of experience under their belt.

“Last year we had a pretty young group. The players that are back from that team, we want to see them take a stride. We’ve seen that in their physicality with guys coming back in better shape. Now we want to see that with their mental game,” said Spruce Kings Head Coach Alex Evin on Friday.

Along with the players maturing, they also have a new leader on the squad. Yesterday, Linden Makow was named the 23rd captain of the Spruce Kings since they joined the BCHL in 1996.

“We’re proud to put the captaincy in Lindy’s hands, he’s been a Spruce King for now his fifth season. He’s seen some ups and downs here and he’s going to bring his own style from his experience,” said Evin on his new team captain. “He’s a kid that works hard every day, true first class human being and comes from a great family. He’s well respected by his teammates and the staff and we’re really looking forward to Linden leading our group this year.”

Makow has played 143 career games for the Kings, putting up 35 goals and assists for 70 points as he heads into his final season with the club.

He and Coach Evin will try their best to lead the Spruce Kings to a bounce back season for their longtime fans in the city.

“We should be a hard working group, a group that plays together through all our ups and downs. We want to be resilient and a group that never quits, “said Coach Evin on what fan’s should expect from his squad.

After their double-header this weekend, the Spruce Kings will kick off their regular season on the road, next Friday, against the reigning Fred Page Cup Champions, the Surrey Eagles.
