Teacher injured following incident involving student

PRINCE GEORGE – A College Heights Secondary teacher suffered a hand injury following an incident involving a student on Thursday (Sept.12).

“There was an incident in a classroom yesterday afternoon that involved us having to clear the classroom and have students move to another part of the building. In that incident, a teacher suffered an injury that required medical attention, I will call it minor medical attention, and a student who was involved in the incident, is currently away from school while we investigate all of the details of what transpired,” said SD57 Superintendent Jameel Aziz.

Aziz added to his knowledge the teacher is doing well and is recovering. Moving forward, he says the top priority is students “overall sense of mental health and well-being,” so counselors have been in the school to debrief with students and be there if any student would like to discuss the incident or if there is any lingering trauma.

“Making sure that our schools are safe for all of our students and staff is obviously the paramount responsibility of the district,” he said.

“We have to determine what basically brought the incident on, whether it’s something that can be managed, whether it’s something that we think could occur again. And if that’s the case, what mitigations do we put in place to make sure that it doesn’t occur again? A whole lot of things to unfold, and there are a number of very seasoned staff who are spending their time today investigating, putting plans together, and making sure that we hopefully never have an incident like this repeated,” he continued.

Given what transpired Aziz understands if there may be any family or students who feel unsafe following the incident, and he said he wanted to assure families SD57 is taking every measure possible to ensure students remain safe.

“SD57 schools are as safe as any public place are. We put every measure in place to make sure that our classrooms, our students, and our buildings are secure. But when you’re dealing with people with a variety of emotions and mental health, not much is predictable anymore. So as much as I would like to share with parents that everything is safe all of the time, that would be inaccurate for me to say that. We do everything possible to make sure that safety is a priority, we do everything possible to make sure that we mitigate any potential unsafe standards. But the reality is that these things do happen on occasion, and they will continue to happen when we’re dealing with the number of people that we deal with,” Aziz said.
