Crews begin work on critical John Hart Bridge sewer line upgrade

PRINCE GEORGE – Work has begun on the John Hart Bridge wastewater line due to a sanitary sewer leak discovered earlier this year.

The upgrade project is estimated to cost over six million dollars and is anticipated to be finished by early next year.

Crews have installed road signs and erected scaffolding to upgrade a leaking sewer pipe attached to the John Hart Highway bridge.

The old pipe attached to the bridge moves over three million litres of sewage daily. According to the city, upgrading the pipe is essential because it services the north side of the Nechako River.

Crews will install a permanent bypass line underneath the bridge to protect the new pipe. The new pipeline will span approximately 1300 metres from a pumping station to the Highway 97 and 5th Avenue intersection, connecting it to the existing line.

The service upgrade will create some traffic delays in the next few months. The city says the leaking pipe was installed in 1977. Officials expect the project to be complete in late February 2025.
