Junk in the Trunk is back

PRINCE GEORGE – Twice every year, hundreds of people converge on the CN Center parking lot to check out what other people are willing to part with.

“Since 2012, we’ve been offering Junk in the Trunk twice a year, spring and fall,” says Terri McClymont with REAPS, which has organized the event. “It’s an opportunity for residents who are apartment dwellers or are in an area where you might not have a lot of foot traffic to have a garage sale so that people can reduce their waste, go into landfill, make a little bit of money and learn about upcycling.”

Along with Junk in the Trunk are items for sale that you just can’t recycle.

“We have a number of stewards that are joining on board with us. So courtesy of the Regional District they come on board. So we have tires, we have thermostats, we have batteries, we have outdoor equipment, we have electronics, and we have outdoor electric power tools.”

The Regional District of Fraser for George runs the landfill operations all through the district, including the Foothills landfill, where all the city of Prince George rubbish is destined. Diverting those unrecyclable items is welcome.

“These are the items that when they end up in our waste stream, they can actually be really problematic,” says Laura Zapotichny, the Manager of Environmental Services for the Regional District. “So there’s there’s different stewardship agencies like you can bring your oil and your antifreeze back to various locations around town. The Foothills site, the Quinn Street site, the Vanway site. But things like tires, tires on rims – this is the one opportunity that residents have to go to this location, bring us their tires on rims.”

The Junk in the Trunk – and all that happens with it – runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the afternoon on Saturday (Sept28).
