PRINCE GEORGE — All candidates forums regarding the energy transition were held this past week at UNBC, and despite Prince George having eleven candidates spread out over three ridings, only four actually showed up, meaning that on two nights, there was only one candidate present.

All the Green Party candidates showed up including James Steidle, Gwen Johansson and Randy Thompson, as well as Indepedent candidate Coralee Oakes. Shar McCrory, Clay Pountney and Denice Bardua of the BC NDP were absent as were Rosalyn Bird, Kiel Giddens and Sheldon Clare of the Conservative Party of BC. Independent candidate for Prince George-Mackenzie Rachael Weber was also not present.

Green Party candidate for Prince George-Valemount Gwen Johannson says that she was concerned about the other candidates not showing up, is that it might be a bad sign for democracy in BC..

The forums were hosted by the Prince George Electric Vehicle Association and UNBC Sustainability, and even though the forums were focused around one issue, voters may not be pleased with candidates decisions to not show up.

“It would definitely behoove them to show up and introduce themselves to the public. It’s definitely not a good look. It’s a risk for the candidates not to show up and it can definitely rub some voters or a lot of voters, the wrong way.” – Chris Beach, Political Science Instructor, CNC
