Heartburn during Thanksgiving? Be careful when using an antacid

PRINCE GEORGE—After a large plate of potatoes and fatty turkey at Thanksgiving you may feel a bit of heartburn. Reaching for the antacids can provide some relief but what exactly do they do?

“They sort of help with neutralizing that excess, stomach acid production,” says pharmacist Brianna Pallot. “Heartburn is essentially you refluxing up acid. So, we want to try and reduce how much acid is available to reflux.”

However hold off on taking antacids if you’re taking other medications. First speak with your pharmacist first as most antacids will interact with certain prescriptions.

“Tums, for example, contains calcium. Calcium interacts with a lot of medications,” adds Pallot. “Just make sure you’re talking to the pharmacist to make sure you’re not grabbing something that’s going to interact with the medication. And if it does the pharmacist could give you ways to mitigate that interaction.”

If you’re looking to avoid heartburn altogether, don’t take the turkey nap or right away. Lying down prevents the acids from moving through your digestive tract as quickly.
