Downtown business owners consider street level surveillance cameras to deter crime

PRINCE GEORGE — Businesses in downtown Prince George are considering installing street level surveillance cameras to help prevent crime, particularly in the evening. The success of a similar system in Penticton is being used as an example of what cameras in downtown Prince George could look like.

Downtown Prince George (DPG) along with the Prince George Chamber of Commerce (PGCO), is looking to establish a security camera pilot program to help prevent crime in the downtown, particularly overnight.

A recent expansion of a pilot program done in Penticton inspired both Downtown PG and the Chamber to create a partnership that will target significant issues businesses face due to theft, vandalism and harassment. The report to the committee says, “the Penticton program has already demonstrated that a camera program that is actively monitored can enhance public safety and support by-law and law enforcement.”

“It would do a lot for my peace of mind and for many of my neighbours. Overnight, we’re not down here to deal with the issues directly ourselves.” – Eoin Foley, Owner, Nancy O’s & Betulla Burning

The goal of the Security Camera Pilot Program is to “enhance the overall safety and security of the community by reducing theft, vandalism, and harassment through strategic surveillance and intervention. DPG and PGCOC are interested in collaborating on a Pilot Program that will support the purchase, installation and monitoring of security cameras aimed at reducing or limiting criminal activity that affects the business community.”
