Over one million British Columbians cast ballots in advanced voting
PRINCE GEORGE — Over a million British Columbians voted in advanced polls over the last week, setting a new record. While advanced voting has proved popular this time around, the practice has been on an upward trend since the early 2000’s.
British Columbians head to the polls on Saturday, October 19 to elect the next provincial government. From October 10 to 16, with the exception of Thanksgiving, advanced voting took place, allowing voters to cast their ballots early. By all means, advanced voting in this election was a record breaker, as 1,001,331 people cast ballots. The previous record was set back in 2020 when 671,000 people cast ballots through advancing voting.
In all three Prince George ridings, 23,413 voters cast their ballots through advanced voting. As of October 7, there are 93,932 registered voters in all Prince George three ridings. Province wide, records were set for turnout on a single day, as 222,907 people voted on October 16.
The increased voter turnout for advanced voting has been on an upward trend since the early 2000’s. At the time only around 10% of ballots cast in a provincial election were at advanced voting, and by 2020, that number had increased to 35%.
