PRINCE GEORGE-VALEMOUNT – CKPG News is declaring BC Conservative Party Candidate Rosalyn Bird the winner of the Prince George-Valemount riding. As of 8:50 p.m., Bird has earned 54.13% of the vote, beating out runner up Clay Pountney of the BC NDP. The full numbers are as follows:

  • Rosalyn Bird, Conservative: 7,726 votes, 54.13%
  • Clay Pountney, NDP: 5,113 votes, 35.77%
  • Gwen Johansson, Green: 1,442 votes, 10.09%

This will be a huge shift for the riding, as former MLA Shirley Bond had been in the position since 2001. However, following the BC United split, Bond decided to retire from her position, opening the position up for Bird. This will be Bird’s first time serving as an MLA. Bird said she’s feeling a little bit nervous stepping into a role held by Bond, but is excited for the opportunity to connect with her constituents and build a strong relationship.

“Some of the things that’s important to me is organization, structure, accountability, transparency. But the most important thing is good communication,” she said.

Bird added she is incredibly happy to see that the other Prince George ridings also went the Conservative Party’s way, saying she’s excited to work with her fellow party members. Bird also wanted to extend a huge thank you to her team who helped her win the riding.

“These people in this room, they got me here. It was not a me thing, I had a huge team behind me, and for that I am incredibly appreciative,” she said.
