PRINCE GEORGE—When you think of body builders you might think of a young athlete taking to the stage but for some that drive to compete in physique comes later in life. John Brink is one of those individuals and is currently training for his next body building competition. Brink says that competing drives him to make healthier decisions,

“Going to compete works for me,” says Brink. “I like it, it gives me a goal.”

Judy Mitchell a former bodybuilder turned power-lifter and adds that going to the gym provides her consistency in life.

Mitchell adds that some might not enjoy the rigorous regimen of body building but might still enjoy lifting heavy weights. She says that powerlifting is a fantastic alternative.

“There are some some ideas for diet,” says Mitchell discussing the differences in bodybuilding and powerlifting. “Most of it is get the food in your mouth. I love food, I love powerlifting because I don’t have to really restrict what I eat.”

While these people have won competitions, they ultimately do it for their personal health and you can as well. Brink suggest that you start with walking to begin getting your body active. Once you have built a routine begin to lift things.

“Start lifting things. It gives your health, your bones, your body so much help as we age,” says Mitchell. “Because our bodies are essentially going to start breaking down.”
