BC SPCA contract is coming to an end

PRINCE GEORGE – As of January 1, 2025, the BC SPCA will no longer provide Animal Shelter Operations for the City of Prince George after the city chose to award the contract to the Prince George Humane Society. The BC SPCA plans to seek a new facility to continue providing animal welfare services to the community. The BC SPCA Prince George Spay/Neuter Clinic will be unaffected by this change.

According to the BC SPCA, the Prince George facility is the busiest in the North, with more than 1,500 animals coming through the shelter doors every year. The highest municipal stray animal intake of any BC SPCA stray animal kenneling facility across the province is managed yearly by the North Cariboo Centre. The facility is often a triage facility for some of the BC SPCA’s largest animal protection seizures.

BC SPCA has provided stray kenneling services for the Prince George community for decades.

The BC SPCA has been planning to build a new purpose-built facility in Prince George, but that project has yet to start and is slated to be completed in 2030.

The BC SPCA says that with the end of the Animal Shelter Operations contract between the BC SPCA and the City, it may need to explore faster solutions to maintain its physical presence.

The BC SPCA Society is investigating suitable options for a physical space or a community services model similar to those piloted in other communities without a physical BC SPCA facility.

Regionally and provincially, services like animal protection investigations and outreach services, including pet food bank programs delivered through community partners, will continue in their existing formats.
