PRINCE GEORGE – Kids need proper nutrition to learn. To ensure that happens, the Ron Brent Elementary kitchen serves students meals throughout the school year. And because the holiday season is right around the corner, staff aims to assemble 100 food hampers for 100 families over the Christmas break. But to make that happen, they are seeking donations to help support these families.

Each morning, a staff member at Ron Brent Elementary prepares a hot meal for students who have missed breakfast. Nutritious foods provide the brain with what it needs to focus, solve problems, and remember information.

Brian Leslie helps organize the annual “One Hundred Hampers for One Hundred Families” event. This year, the goal is to raise over $24,000 to purchase and distribute food hampers to support families during the two-week Christmas break.

“ A hamper is not necessarily one box of food. It could be 2 or 3 boxes of food or, you know, a bigger family needs more food.”

Nearly two-thirds of the school’s population is given a food hamper during the break.

The school cannot accept food donations; therefore, financial contributions can be made by contacting Ron Brent Elementary.

By addressing food insecurity, the program will ensure that children have the energy and focus they need to thrive academically, even during challenging times.

Donations can be made in three ways:

1) etransfer@sd57.bc.ca ….. payable to Ron Brent Hamper project

2) A cheque payable to “Ron Brent Elementary School” re: 100 hampers for 100 families
