PRINCE GEORGE— A group of UNBC students in the Environmental and Sustainable Studies Program finished their “Greening PG” capstone project with a community gathering on Saturday.

“For our final report, we really wanted to have concrete data to give to our professor, and just talk about the things that we got from it and the things that the community brought in as well. There’s a lot of public engagement events that happen with the university and with different classes, but a lot of them stay within the university. So having this community wide initiative, and getting this information from what other people in the community, not just at UNBC are doing is really important to us,” said UNBC student Denae Meise.

Sustainability has become a very important topic worldwide, but it’s just as important in Prince George.

“Prince George is very vulnerable to climate change. We saw a few years ago when the Lower Mainland flooded, we thought we were going to be cut off from food supply and basic goods. So, thinking about how we can make our city more sustainable and more resilient to climate change is important,” said UNBC student Ben Gadd.

This event was open to the public for discussions about sustainability, with a plethora of written prompts around the venue to get people talking and thinking about sustainability.

“When we say sustainable, a lot of people just think like environmentalism. That’s it. It goes beyond that. Social and economic sustainability is huge, and we can’t have one without the other,” said Meise

This was a great way for community members passionate about the overall crisis, to share ideas and get into deep conversation about how to make Prince George better for the future. Meise thinks this could be a stepping stone for big things to come.

“It’s something that I think is going to have a long lasting impact in the community and people are really going to remember. Hopefully it will inspire people to do something similar in future.”
