PRINCE GEORGE – The seventh annual Miracle on Third fundraising event will take place on December 6 from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in front of the CKPG News building on third avenue. Every year the fundraiser partners with a local community organization, and the Association Advocating for Women and Community (AWAC) is this year’s recipient.

“It absolutely is life saving and life changing. If it wasn’t for AWAC, I’m not sure where I would be right now,” said Olivia Holland, one of many who have benefitted from AWAC’s programs.

“My physical safety was at risk when I first came to town, and they welcomed me with open arms and really just helped keep me safe and surround me with love and care,” Holland continued.

“It changed my life, I have my kids back in my life. I got a lot of dental work done. I get opportunities to go back to school, to go back to work,” said Shannon Heskell, another AWAC client.

AWAC offers a continuum of care, meaning it has many programs all focused on getting people off the streets, sober, and living independently and safely.

“We offer jobs to people who are are in recovery and are new to employment, and we help people go back to school, things like that,” said AWAC’s Peer Program Director Juanita Hyslop.

“We have a number of clients who started out in our shelter and have now graduated to a one year clean and sober, and it’s such an exciting thing to see,” Hyslop continued.

Similar to Heskell, Codey McLean, another AWAC client, says AWAC helped her reconnect with her family and her daughter.

“It fills my heart so much. That’s something that I used to dream about and pray about all through my life and 12 years later I’m able to connect with her (McLean’s daughter) and I have the support of Olive’s Branch to help me through that. And, it’s a miracle. It truly is a miracle,” McLean said.

While any and all donations would be greatly appreciated, items like cash, winter clothing, hygiene items, and more would be greatly appreciated. All donations will go directly to AWAC and support the organization in its efforts to change people’s lives.
