Ravensbergen’s heroics helps Cougars snap three-game losing streak

PRINCE GEORGE — The Joshua Ravesnbergen show helped the Prince George Cougars to a 4-2 win over the Regina Pats at CN Centre Friday (Dec. 6) night.

The 18-year-old Ravensbergen, who could be a potential first-round NHL Draft pick next year, stopped 32 of 34 shots to help a sluggish Cougars team snap a three game losing streak.

The North Vancouver native, who improved to 12-3-3-1 this season, was especially exceptional in the third period as the Pats outshot the Cougars 16-8 in the final 20 minutes.

Riley Heidt – who is set to join Canada’s World Juniors selection camp next week – opened the scoring for Prince George at 3:37 of the first period with shot into a gaping net from the side of the post.

The Pats’ Reese Hamilton knotted the game at 1-1 late in the period, but Borya Valis’ restored the Cougars lead as he found the back of the net in the dying seconds.

Terik Parascak then doubled the Cougars’ lead with a power play goal in late in the second period courtesy a Caron Carels shot that went in off his skate past Kelton Pyne in the Regina net.

Pyne finished with 17 saves on 20 shots in 57:38 of action for the Pats, who drop to 7-17-2-2 and sit in the second last in the WHL standings.

Caden Brown, a Prince George native and former Cougar, made things interesting with just over a minute left in the third as he scored to make it a 3-2 game.

There was no comeback to be had as Valis’s second of the night into the empty net 30 seconds later sealed the win for Prince George, who improve to 14-8-3-2. They remain two points behind the Victoria Royals for top spot in the B.C. Division with a game in hand over their Island rivals.

The Cougars are hosting the Kamloops Blazers in the annual teddy bear toss game at CN Centre at 6:00 p.m. Saturday night.
